Texas uses eCommDirect, the official Texas Department of Criminal Justice deposit portal, as its primary deposit service. Several other methods are also accepted at most TDCJ facilities.

Method 1 — eCommDirect (Online, Recommended)

  • Visit tdcj-ecommdirect.portal.texas.gov and create a free account.
  • Pay with a debit card, credit card, or electronic check. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
  • Funds are typically credited to the inmate's account within 24–48 hours on business days.
  • Service and transaction fees may apply — review the current fee schedule on the eCommDirect site before submitting.

Method 2 — JPay (Online & Mobile)

  • Visit JPay.com or download the app: Android iOS
  • Create an account, search for your inmate by name or ID number, and submit your deposit securely.

Method 3 — MoneyGram (In-Person or Online)

  • Visit any MoneyGram agent location (Walmart, CVS, Kroger, etc.) or go to moneygram.com.
  • Provide the inmate's full name, ID number, and the facility name to the agent.

Method 4 — Money Order by Mail (USPS Only)

  • Make the money order payable to the inmate's full name and include the inmate's TDCJ ID number on the memo line.
  • Mail to the specific facility's business office. The mailing address is printed on the TDCJ facility page.
  • Processing time: 5–10 business days after the facility receives the envelope.
  • Personal checks and cash are not accepted.

Calling an Inmate in Texas
